Portable Satellite Radio
Receiver Review: Sirius Stiletto SL100
Portable audio devices
have made incredible strides over the last few years, especially when it comes to storage and
multifunctionality, but one important thing that some of the popular devices still can’t do is get radio. The
popular iPods, for example, can’t get standard, old-fashioned radio reception, let alone satellite radio. That’s
why for those of us who prefer live radio over other types of entertainment, things like iPods just aren’t good
enough.
Fortunately, the Sirius
satellite radio company is now meeting the needs of the underserved radio market with a portable satellite radio
receiver that does everything a standard satellite radio receiver does, but in the form of a simple device that
can fit in your pocket.
On first look, the most
striking thing about this portable satellite radio receiver is its appearance. It’s small enough to fit in the
palm of the hand, and the intuitive design of the controls makes it easy to jump right in and start listening.
The colorful screen is clear and easy to read, and it doesn’t suffer from poor visibility in high-light areas,
which bodes well for using this radio during outdoor activities on sunny days.
Here are some of the
main features of this Sirius portable satellite radio receiver:
·
Built-in antenna:
You don’t have to get
a separate antenna for this portable satellite radio receiver.
·
Presets: The receiver enables you to establish 30
preset channels.
·
Memory storage:
It has up to 800 MB of
storage space for digital auto and can handle all MP3 and WMA files.
·
Sirius Replay:
With the Sirius Replay
feature, this portable satellite radio receiver lets you pause, replay, and rewind up to 60 minutes of live
radio.
·
Game Alert: For sports fans, the Game Alert feature
lets you know when your favorite games are on and sends an alert when someone scores.
·
Wi-Fi functionality:
When
you’re in a wi-fi hotspot, the portable satellite radio receiver
can use this connection to stream satellite radio content.
I’ve been a satellite
radio customer for years, and this is definitely the best device that I’ve come across. The controls and
interface are perfect, and although it’s not as fully intuitive as iPod controls, it’s very simple to use once
you get used to it. I find that the controls are simple enough that I don’t have to stop what I’m doing to
change the channel or record a song. In fact, after using the portable satellite radio receiver for a few weeks,
I had the controls memorized and didn’t even have to look anymore.
While I would definitely
recommend this device for all satellite radio fans, there is one small problem that has popped up a few times in
my usage. In certain areas where there are blockages, such as an area with lots of tall buildings or a hilly
park, the reception can become choppy. I find that it always comes back if you move to a slightly different
location, but it’s still a little annoying when the signal cuts out.
